Brazil’s Abinee: new US tariffs are cause for concern and are unjustifiable Bnamericas

Abinee once again emphasizes that the new 25% tariffs announced by the US on Brazilian products, after the conclusion of the Section 301 investigation under US trade law, are unjustifiable. “This is a moment of great concern, since the US market is extremely important for our sector,” says Abinee’s executive president, Humberto Barbato.

In the entity’s opinion, Brazil does not adopt “discriminatory or restrictive” practices in trade with the Americans. After the start of the investigation, in June 2025, the Association sent a letter to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR, in the acronym in English), in support of CNI’s statement to the same body, refuting the arguments of the US.

The Association highlights the presence of industries with capital of North American origin operating in Brazil and notes that Brazilian regulations and commercial practices are in compliance with international trade rules.

Abinee also once again highlights that the trade flow in the electrical and electronic sector between the two countries shows a surplus in favor of the Americans. In 2025, business with the United States recorded a negative balance for Brazil of US$2.7 billion, with exports of US$2.1 billion and imports of US$4.8 billion. The most affected segment is the electrical one, especially transformers, motors and generators, and components for Industrial Equipment, which are among the items most exported by the sector to the North American market. Recently, Abinee sent official letters to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) and the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC) requesting support for the inclusion of products from the Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution (GTD) segment on the list of exceptions to the tariffs resulting from Section 301 of the United States.

The entity argues for preserving dialogue between the two countries, maintaining a diplomatic tradition of around 200 years, founded on commercial and cultural exchange, with beneficial results for the economic and social development of both nations.

Abinee reinforces its commitment to defending the national productive sector and believes that the diplomatic path will be fundamental to ensuring the reliability and predictability that have always guided this bilateral relationship between Brazil and the USA.
